Trinbagonian folklore/ mythical characters ( Folklore / mythical characters from Trinidad and Tobago) By : *tinyblogs*
Hey guys, I'm back but today I'll be doing my post based on some of the folklore characters from my country. Without further ado let's jump straight into the topic.
Sooo... first up on the list we've got
1). Douen (dowen) -These are the souls of children who died before they were baptized. They have no faces and their feet are turned backwards. They are found in forests, are gender less and may lead children astray when they are lost in the forest. It is also said that if you ever hear someone calling your name during a full moon, do not answer as it would be a douen trying to lure you into the forest. Parents are also warned not to call their children's names out loud as the douens can hear and easily remember the the names. They also feed on river crabs.
3). Mama Glow or Mama Dlo - she is a half woman, half snake with long hair which she come constantly with a fish comb. She is known as the protector of the river and protects the animals that dwell within it.
4). Lugarhoo or lagahoo - Is a person who can change themselves into a half animal. At night it rattles and drags chains and has a bunch of dry sticks and rieds in its hand as a whip. It is said that if you take dog yampee ( mucus from the corner of the eye.), place into your eye and look through a key hole at mid night you would be able to see the lagahoo. ( please do not do this as the only thing you'll end up with would be an eye infection.)
5). Papa Bois ( papa bwa ) - Also known as " Father of the forest" he protects the animals that live in the forest from hunters. He is an old and hairy man, with cloven boots for feet with a muscular build. He can appear as a deer.
Soucouyant (so-coon-nyah) - known for shedding her skin and changing herself into a ball of fire, she cast spells on people turning them into animals. She is also known for sucking the blood of her victims.
